USPS Priority Mail Rates – Commercial Plus
Priority Mail is often the best option for shipments between 1 and 5 lbs. In addition to being low-cost, it’s faster than FedEx or UPS Ground to many destinations, often delivering in 2-3 days cross-country. There are no residential delivery or extended area surcharges.
With Commercial Plus pricing, you can get all the benefits of Priority Mail and save versus Retail or Commercial Base rates.

Dimensional Weight Pricing
Although there aren’t residential or extended area fees, you still need to factor in Dim Weight. Unlike FedEx and UPS though, Dim Weight only applies to packages over one cubic foot in volume, and going to Zones 5-9. To calculate the Dim Weight, multiply the package’s length times width times height (in inches). That’s the total cubic volume. Divide by 194 and you’ve got the Dim Weight (in lbs).
If your package is staying in Zones 1-4, then you don’t have to worry about Dim Weight, but if it’s bulky, you might get hit with the Balloon rate. It’s applied to packages that are more than 84″ in length plus girth. Here are some examples:
|Package Example||Calculation||Length plus Girth||Balloon?|
|16″x16″x16″||16″+2*16″+2*16″||80″||No, balloon pricing does not apply|
|24″x18″x12″||24″+2*18″+2*12″||84″||No, balloon pricing does not apply (but it’s close!)|
|18″x18″x18″||18″+2*18″+2*18″||90″||Yes, balloon pricing applies|
The balloon rate is the same as the rate for a 20-lb package, so if the package actually weighs more than 20 lbs, then the regular weight-based charge applies.
